Come and get involved with Totem Short Plays!
Develop your writing, directing and acting skills!
The program culminates in a short play festival staged at the Totem Theatre in 2019. It’s open to Central Australian writers, directors and actors of all levels of experience.
The program is currently in the ‘Acting and Directing’ phase, having completed the first ‘Kick Starting’ and second ‘Script Development’ phases. The fourth ‘Staging’ phase will kick off in July.
Phase 3: Acting and Directing
March – August 2019
Six directors will be selected to direct the plays staged for the Totem Short Play Festival.
Directors will audition actors, organise rehearsals and oversee all technical and artistic
aspects of their short play. They will also take part in Directing mentoring and workshop program.
Directors of selected scripts will receive mentoring with Drew Fairley that consists of one mentored
rehearsal followed by a one-on-one session and 3 group workshops in Alice Springs in late May 2019.
The mentoring program is an integral part of the Short Play Festival and is compulsory for
Director EOIs are due March 29 and selected Directors will be announced April 8.
Auditions for actors will be held on May 4 & 5. Actors may audition and perform in more than one play,
depending on rehearsal times and commitments. Actors will also participate in two group workshops and
one mentored rehearsal during the Mentoring Program in late May. Actors must be available for at
least one weekly rehearsal, as well as all technical and dress rehearsals and performances.
Actor EOIs are due April 30. Auditions will take place May 4 with call-backs May 5.

- Saturday May 18, 1hr between 9am – 5pm, Script Reading & Discussion
- Sunday May 19, 10am – 4pm, Directors Workshop (incl 1hr break)
- Saturday May 24, 9.30am – 1.30pm, Actors Workshop (incl 1hr break)
- One Mentored 2hr rehearsal for each play during the week of May 20 – 23, followed by a
one-on-one debrief session for Directors.
Drew Fairley – Biography
Since graduating from the School of Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong Drew
has worked internationally as an actor, writer and director.
Most recently Drew performed in Larry’s Odyssey by Vashti Hughes, directed by James Winter.
He also performed with award winning puppet and physical theatre company ERTH in their national tour
of The Prehistoric Aquarium, the Kids Café at the Sydney Opera House, in Deathtrap at the
Darlinghurst Theatre and Jack and the Beanstalk (Directed by Chira Guidi) for the Adelaide
festival. He is writing for Accolade Events Company in the reimagined Sovereign Hill
light and sound spectacular.
